Yamilex Hernández Returns Home to Perth Amboy

August 8, 2025 · City Hall, Perth Amboy, NJ

Perth Amboy gathered at City Hall to welcome home Yamilex Hernández after her win as the first Miss Universe Latina champion. Friends, family, and neighbors filled the room to congratulate her and wish her well as she prepares for the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand.

A 2013 graduate of Perth Amboy High School, Hernández moved to the city from the Dominican Republic when she was 13. Her confidence, warmth, and advocacy for mental health education made her stand out during the Telemundo competition.

Mayor Helmin J. Caba presented her with a proclamation, a star-shaped plaque, and a city pin to take with her to Thailand.

“Yamilex’s achievement reflects the determination and pride of our city. She shows what’s possible when you work hard and believe in yourself.”
— Mayor Helmin J. Caba

New Jersey Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez also recognized Hernández’s accomplishments and her role as a positive example for young people.

“Where your journey begins doesn’t define you; it’s the love, passion, and heart you put into what you do. Believe in yourself and work hard, anything is possible.”
