Historic Preservation Commission

Concerned about the loss of a large number of historical and architectural landmarks in previous years, the City of Perth Amboy formed a Historic Preservation Commission in 1993. The Commission has several primary responsibilities:
  • To keep an inventory of the city’s historic, cultural, architectural, and archaeological resources.
  • To identify historical sites and landmarks for local designation.
  • To review proposed changes to sites, landmarks, or structures within historic districts.
  • To review proposed new construction within or adjacent to historic districts.
The Perth Amboy Historic Preservation Commission is the city’s most important tool for safeguarding the city’s historical, cultural, and architectural heritage. For detailed information on the Historic Preservation Commission’s powers and responsibilities, consult Chapter 258 of the city code on this website.

Current Exhibit

The Historic Preservation Commission is hosting Revolutionary Lives: Living the American Experiment Then and Now at the Surveyor General’s Office from April 11 through April 26, 2026.

This traveling exhibition explores the stories of everyday people in New Jersey during the American Revolution and invites visitors to reflect on how those experiences still connect to civic life today.
