When George Washington came to Perth Amboy

Perth Amboy’s William Dunlap created a pastel portrait after Washington sat for him around 1783. The work later hung in the U.S. Senate.

This Month in Perth Amboy’s History — October 2025

October 1777. British troops occupied Staten Island while American forces monitored movements from Perth Amboy’s shoreline. The city served as a key observation post during this tense period of the Revolutionary War.

October 1783. With the war’s end, Perth Amboy’s harbor reopened to trade and shipping. Local craftsmen and merchants helped rebuild the regional economy as peace returned to New Jersey.
