The Perth Amboy Water Department issued an NJDEP-required public notice after routine monitoring showed
the system exceeded the drinking water standard (MCL) for Gross Alpha Particle Activity.
The standard is 15 pCi/L, and the running annual average reported was 16 pCi/L.
What it means for residents
- This is not an emergency. If it were, residents would have been notified within 24 hours.
- There is nothing you need to do. You do not need to boil water or take corrective actions at home.
- If you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, pregnant residents, or seniors may wish to seek guidance from a health care provider.
What the City is doing
- Evaluating treatment options to remove Gross Alpha Particle Activity and Combined Radium-226/228.
- Supplementing supply from a neighboring system (including purchasing additional water where applicable).
- Bench testing and pilot testing treatment techniques for a temporary option and longer-term improvements.
- Increasing the frequency of testing for Gross Alpha Particle Activity and Combined Radium-226/228.
