Auxiliary Police Program

The Auxiliary Police Program is a partnership with the Perth Amboy Police Department where volunteers train to operate in times of emergency. These dedicated individuals donate more than 9,000 hours annually to help make the City a better and safer place to live, shop, and work. The Perth Amboy Auxiliary Police pride themselves on being a highly regarded and state recognized Auxiliary Police Force that serves as a model for other NJ Municipalities to replicate.

The Auxiliary Police unit volunteered a total of 9169 hours in 2018. These 25 professional Auxiliary Police Officers have dedicated many hours to downtown patrols, church traffic, parades, processions, carnivals, festivals, waterfront patrol, bike patrol, graffiti enforcement and city parks patrol. They patrol and are utilized seven days a week. They work hand in hand with the Juvenile Aid Bureau implementing curfew enforcement.

It is extremely important that the community is aware of these dedicated citizens who have become an integral part of the Police Department and provide much needed services to the citizens of Perth Amboy. Our Auxiliary Police Unit became the first Auxiliary Unit in the State to be trained on and carry Narcan to help fight our opioid crisis in this Country. Auxiliary Officers have been credited with saving lives with this program,

The Perth Amboy Auxiliary Police was established in 1946 as the Police Reserve Unit, under the State Civil Defense Act of 1942. In 1954, the Police Reserve Unit grew to a strong 100 Reserve Officers.
