New E-Bike Law: Comply by July 19, 2026
What is required?

Valid license: Age 17 and older must have a driver’s license.
Ages 15 to 16 must have a motorized bicycle license.

State registration: All e-bikes must be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

Insurance: Insurance is required.

First-year fee waiver: License and registration fees are waived for the first year.
Important restrictions

Age limit: Children under 15 are prohibited from operating e-bikes.

Speed and power: The law applies to all e-bike classes, including pedal-assist,
throttle, and high-powered e-bikes.

Sales and modifications: Online e-bike sales are banned statewide for one year.
Modification kits that increase bike speed are illegal.
