Thomas Mundy Peterson Day

Perth Amboy honored the life and legacy of Thomas Mundy Peterson, who made history in 1870 as the first African American to vote following ratification of the 15th Amendment.

The annual commemoration marked the 156th anniversary of his historic vote at Perth Amboy City Hall and was part of the City's celebration of America's 250th anniversary.

Residents stepped into Perth Amboy's Revolutionary past through an interactive history experience with George and Martha Washington and visits to historic landmarks across the City.

Thomas Mundy Peterson Day

Perth Amboy commemorated the 156th anniversary of Thomas Mundy Peterson's historic vote. On March 31, 1870, Peterson became the first African American to vote following ratification of the 15th Amendment, an important chapter in Perth Amboy's history and the expansion of American democracy.
