Auxiliary Police Program

The Auxiliary Police Program is a volunteer partnership with the Perth Amboy Police Department, supporting public safety operations during emergencies, special events, and community activities. These dedicated volunteers contribute thousands of hours annually to help keep the City a safe place to live, work, and visit. The Perth Amboy Auxiliary Police are widely respected and recognized at the state level for their professionalism, training, and operational readiness.

The unit currently comprises 12 professional Auxiliary Police Officers (2026) and continues to grow. Auxiliary Officers are deployed seven days a week and assist with downtown patrols, church traffic, parades, processions, festivals, waterfront patrols, bicycle patrols, graffiti enforcement, and park patrols. They also work closely with the Special Victims Bureau in support roles that enhance community safety and victim services.

Auxiliary Police Officers are an integral part of the Perth Amboy Police Department and provide essential services that directly benefit residents and visitors. Perth Amboy was the first Auxiliary Police Unit in New Jersey trained and authorized to carry Narcan. Auxiliary Officers have played a critical role in responding to opioid-related emergencies and have been credited with saving lives through this program.

The Perth Amboy Auxiliary Police Unit was established in 1946 as the Police Reserve Unit under the State Civil Defense Act of 1942. In 1954, the Reserve Unit expanded significantly, reflecting the growing public safety needs of the city. In 1985, by resolution of the Governing Body, the City of Perth Amboy formally established the Auxiliary Police Unit under its current designation.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police and in coordination with directives from the Office of Emergency Management, Auxiliary Police Officers are utilized during emergencies, disasters, planned events, and training operations.

Auxiliary Police Officers complete training at the Middlesex County Auxiliary Police Academy. Upon successful completion of the 18-week training program, officers are sworn in and authorized to serve in accordance with state and municipal guidelines.

Auxiliary Police Officers regularly support community events, special details, patrol operations, and public safety initiatives across the city.
